    Yes, absolutely. A true portable air conditioner works by extracting the hot air and humidity from your room, cooling it over refrigeration coils, and sending the leftover heat out through an exhaust hose. If you don't hang the hose out of a window or door using a sealing kit, the unit will simply blast the hot air straight back into the room, making it completely ineffective.

    Note: If a device claims to cool your room without a hose, it is an "evaporative cooler" (or air cooler). These require ice or water and only provide a light breeze, which can actually increase room humidity.
